When my sister turned 40 I knew I wanted to mark the occasion with something special, but I didn't know what it should be. I felt like I needed to make something unique for her. In the past I made photo books for her kids' birthdays with all the photos of their year, so I started with the idea of making a book ( I guess I love to give, make and receive books!) I wanted to celebrate my sister and all the things her friends and family love about her to make her feel good about hitting this milestone year, so I titled the book, "Why Heather is Awesome." Almost two months before her birthday I composed an email and sent it to her friends and family. It asked friends and family to complete one of the following:
1. Heather is awesome because...
2. I love Heather because...
3. I have a memory of Heather...
4. Just send in a photo you have of her!
I received lots of great photos and stories and compiled them in a photo book on Blurb. Blurb offers a variety of sizes - 7" x 7", 8" x 10" Portrait or Landscape, 12" x 12" and 13" x 11". You can also choose to make it hardcover with a dust jacket, hardcover with a printed cover, or a soft cover. I have made several books with Blurb and they have always looked professional!
Some people sent in both stories and photos, while others sent in one or the other. It didn't matter what they sent, I was happy to have the contributions! I recruited some help from my mom to send me a couple "vintage" photos of my sister as a kid. I used these for the front and back covers of the book - I love the cover photo of her in a dance recital as a 3 year old!
Here are a few excerpts from the book to give you an idea of how it looked. It is appropriate for a 40th birthday, but could also be created for any milestone year!
Happy Birthday, Sis!
