Did you know that Great White Sharks can jump up to 10ft out of the water? I didn't, but I learned this and more from the book, Super Shark Encyclopedia and Other Creatures of the Deep and thankfully there was a photo of a shark jumping out of the water to show this! It is a large book with approximately 200 pages of photos and facts about many sea creatures, not just sharks. Scroll through the images below to see examples of what is inside the Super Shark Encyclopedia and Other Creatures of the Deep:
This book was purchased to give with the National Geographic Shark Tooth Dig Kit. I have seen boys and girls ages 5, 8 and 13 request and enjoy similar excavation kits. They make a little bit of mess, so it is probably best done outdoors. Items are encased in what looks like painted plaster and the child uses the included tools to chip away at the material to reveal the treasures inside. When using a similar kit, my son discovered that the plaster can be used as sidewalk chalk as well and drew on the driveway to remove some of the material before prying out the treasures. The instructions suggest wetting the dig brick to soften it if needed. The National Geographic Shark Tooth Dig Kit comes with three shark tooth fossils, each from a different type of shark that can be identified with the book that comes with it. I can think of several kids that would enjoy this shark-themed gift. Be sure to see the photos of the dig kit below!
