Children's Science Starter Kit

Ada Twist Scientist Book Cover

The girl of two scientists is turning four and I thought they may appreciate this science-themed gift. The Learning Resources Primary Science Lab Activity Set has lots of great pieces that can be used for science experiments or just playing around the house. I know my kids would use pieces from this set while playing in the bath, making up their own experiments, using the eyedropper to transfer water from one container to the other, or just examining everything around the house with the large magnifying glass! It comes with a beaker, magnifying glass, funnel, eyedropper, flask, tweezers, goggles, test tubes of various sizes with stands, and 10 activity cards. The activity cards suggest activities that require materials like food coloring, vinegar, baking soda, and cooking oil. A younger child may enjoy pouring colored water from one test tube to another, while an older child who can read, may enjoy doing the experiments themselves.

To go with this children's science set is the best-selling book, Ada Twist, ScientistThis book is about a curious little girl who doesn't speak a word until she is three, then asks a lot of questions and explores her surroundings. One day she smells something unusual and sets off to discover what it was. Scroll through the images below to see more inside this Ada Twist, Scientist. Or to see the full story, watch and listen to this You Tube Video. It is a fun read for any curious kid! My 5 year old knew what the smell was right away, while my 2 year old wanted me to read it again so he could look at all the drawings.

If the child is older, he or she may enjoy The Curious Kid's Science Book which has activities for 4 through 8 year olds. We have this kid's science activity book and started some of the activities when our oldest child was four. He has really enjoyed the experiments. Some of the experiments we have tried include putting various substances on ice cubes to see if one of them melts the ice faster than the others, putting seeds at various heights in the dirt to see which grows best, and tying a string across the room and attaching a balloon and straw to make a balloon shuttle. The book doesn't tell you what results you should get, but will let you make your own observations and conclusions. Thinking about The Curious Kid's Science Book makes me want to try another activity from it!
